The Dying Autopsy
In modern clinical practice the autopsy has been relegated to infrequent use. However, as a diagnostic tool the autopsy remains an important medical procedure with substantial, if largely underutilized, potential to advance medical knowledge and improve clinical practice. Many doctors now lack familiarity with autopsy practices, and are insufficiently aware of the benefits for not only bereaved families and also present and future patients. For more information go to the link below for a review, which has an international perspective, that examines the decline of the autopsy, the legal frameworks that govern its use, the value and potential pitfalls of alternatives, and the autopsy's role in undergraduate medical education. The reviews also highlight the continuing value of autopsies to improve the completeness and reliability of death certification for public-health and to bereaved families.

The Final Diagnosis: What The Autopsy Reveals About Life and Death
by Boris Datnow, M.D. and Claire Datnow, M.A.
This book rewards readers with insight into this little known branch of pathology, its scientific conclusions and human repercussions. Clue by clue, the reader discovers the cause and manner of death of individuals who died of natural or accidental causes—not by criminal means. Written in accessible and entertaining style, the autopsy cases explore important issues many of use will face: How to find peace of mind or assuage guilt when a loved one dies in strange circumstances? When is an autopsy necessary? Who will take care of an elderly family member? How can rural hospitals provide effective medical services with escalating cost of health care? When is it right to terminate life support?
