Green Ribbon Schools Award

Alabama Green Ribbon Schools
On a day filled with sunshine, it was my pleasure and privilege to attend the celebration recognizing the three schools and a university as Alabama Green Ribbon Schools Award Winners for 2015.

Green Ribbon Shirely Farrell
Shirley Farrell, State Dept. of Education, with Liz Ellerson of E.A.T. South (Boris Datnow)

Congratulations to the winners:
Auburn University
Bluff Park Elementary School, Hoover City Schools
Lincoln Elementary School, Talladega County Schools
Lincoln High School, Talladega County Schools
The Green Ribbon Schools award recognizes schools that are creating healthy and sustainable learning environments and teaching environmental literacy. All schools are measured against the three “pillars” of the national award:
Pillar 1: reducing environmental impact and increasing energy efficiency;
Pillar 2: promoting improved health for students and staff; and
Pillar 3: ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy.

Authors at Green Ribbon Schools
Authors Irene Latham, Roger Reed, and Claire Datnow

We all owe a special thanks to the teachers who are the motivating force behind the Green Ribbon Schools for inspiring the next generation to become wise stewards of our precious natural resources.

It was an honor to present autographed books of my eco mystery series, The Adventures of The Sizzling Six, to the winning school. Authors Irene Latham presented her books, and Roger Reed presented his books and videos of the Discovering Alabama series. E.A.T. South in downtown Montgomery generously provided their delightful venue for the celebration and picnic lunch surrounded by vegetable gardens and clucking chickens.

Kudos to Shirely Farrell, Gifted Education Specialist at the Alabama State Department of Education, for organizing the event so expertly. Teacher Handout and Curricula Unit for the eco mystery series can be downloaded from:
